

Elmer Chen
M.A., Ph.D.
Elmer Chen is Counselling Therapist at Steinbach Counselling and Associate Professor of Counselling Psychology at Providence Seminary. He holds an M.A. in counselling from Providence and a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Birmingham. His experience spans 20 years in various ministries, including individual, marriage, and family counselling as well as college and university teaching. He has worked with issues of marriage, anxiety, depression, sexual addiction, food and substance abuse, self-concept, spirituality, anger, and grief. He works with individuals (16+ years old) and couples.
Elmer is warm, compassionate, and insightful, and has a passion to help each person learn and grow through life’s problems to become their best selves in healthy living and relationships. His counselling is based in psychodynamic and cognitive-based models, and is trauma-informed and influenced by various other modalities and theories including person-centered, ACT, DBT, IFS, and IPNB. Elmer also has special interests in heterosexual dynamics, personality typology, and conflict resolution.
Elmer and his wife have been married since 2001 and have two young adult children. He enjoys reading, teaching, music, and a variety of sports.
